Big Game Hunting with WTR Outfitters in the Bob Marshall Wilderness & Scapegoat Wilderness Areas

WTR Outfitters, has been involved with outfitting for Big Game Hunting Parties for over 40 years. We are licensed with the Montana Board of Outfitters, license #3341. We have been taking in parties to both guided and unguided camps for years. We are well established with a 800 acre ranch located close to the Scapegoat and Bob Marshall Wilderness areas. These areas allow for rifle hunting during the bugle season beginning Sept. 15th each year, with the season ending the Sunday after Thanksgiving. We offer a 9 day hunt with 7 full days of hunting. We now have - and have had for many years - special use permits to hunt in these areas. We have 40 head of mountain-trained saddle horses and 4 strings of gentle, well-broke mountain mules and pack horses.

We are confident that our hunting trips will help you experience a top quality wilderness hunt. The elk herd is stable and growing in our hunting areas of 150 and 280. Our elk success rate in our guided hunting camps generally runs higher than the state average. The success rate in our non-guided camps averages lower, because working with a guide can make a difference. Cows can be hunted in each of the areas, if you are interested please let us know and we will furnish you with the information you need to get a tag.

What We Hunt

The types of game in the area where we hunt include: elk, deer, bear, moose, goat, grouse, and good fishing, all of which can be hunted with the proper permits and licenses.

Number of Hunters

We do a top quality job and feel a big party and good hunting (in our area at least) are not compatible.

Each camp (see descriptions below) accommodates up to 6 hunters with 4 being the ideal group size. Guided camps are complete with a cook and food, and with 2 hunters normally per guide. Unguided camps, now called "semi-guided" camps, are identical to guided with only 1 guide per camp.

WTR Outfitters offers four types of hunts to serve hunters. The Deluxe, Specialty and Economy Guided Hunts have everything included (see below). The drop camp hunts are very basic with no frills. The variety of hunts offered are designed to meet the needs of hunters.

Non-resident combo hunting licenses go on sale March 15 and as an "outfitted guided" hunter you can apply for a guaranteed non-resident hunting license. Prices are as follows:

Black Bear (must purchase before season) $350.00

IMPORTANT: Please call the Montana Dept. of Fish, Wildlife and Parks at 406-444-2950 in late December to obtain a non-resident hunting application. Your completed application, with the license fee needs to be returned to us in plenty of time for you to sign the outfitter certification and return it to us. We'll attach the certification, your license fee and application, and get them to the Fish and Game before the March 15 deadline.

WTR Hunting Camps
Danaher Camp. Hunting Area No. 150. Due to the 2000 fire season, this camp is temporarily unavailable. This camp is in the famous South Fork of the Flathead drainage, on the headwater of Danaher Creek in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. It is reached by pack train over an excellent trail which is comparatively level; the distance is about 20 miles. We have an exclusive commercial permit in what is known as the Danaher Valley. This is considered one of Montana's most beautiful valleys; besides the hunting, trout fishing is good. Topo maps for the area are Danaher and Flint Mtn.

Cooney Creek Camp. Hunting Area No. 280. This camp is on the headwater of the North Fork of the Blackfoot River in the heart of the majestic Scapegoat Wilderness Area. This camp, like the Danaher, is only accessible via pack train and saddle horse and is 14 miles over a comparatively level trail which winds in and out of scenic canyons. This camp is at 6000 feet and is ideally located in the center of an area where 10 separate canyons converge. Most of them end on the Continental Divide. We have an exclusive commercial permit for this area. Topo maps for the area are Scapegoat Mtn. and Olson Peak.

Deer Park. The Cooney Creek Camp is moved to a lower elevation for the last two hunts of the season due to the snow and cold. Topo map for the area is Lake Mtn.
