Spencer Balcom, 14, Seeley Lake, placed ninth in his division in the recent Youth American Bowling Alliance Coca-Cola International Finals held in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 4 - 8.
Spencer went three matches in the semi-finals, losing to the boy who won the tournament. He received a plaque for becoming a finalist.
281 bowlers from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, the Carribean, Europe, the Far East, South Africa and Mongolia participated in the five day event. Bowlers were divided into divisions and bowled 12 qualifying games to get to the top 16 to advance to the semi-finals. Semi-finals were head to head elimination matches. At stake for the top four bowlers in each division was $35,000 in scholarship money.
Spencer was one of 40,000 bowlers who started at local levels, then qualified as a state or international champion to advance to the international finals. He received $460 in scholarship money and an all expenses paid trip to the international finals.
