Conrad native Hazel Jones Palomino, a 1982 graduate of Conrad High School, will be the new Pondera County Superintendent of Schools beginning on Aug. 16.

She will take over for Helen McCurdie, who resigned from that position effective in July. It is an elected office she had held since 1995.

After graduating from high school, Palomino went on to the (now) University of Great Falls on an academic scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Speech Communication.

Palomino has done Masters work in K-12 Reading Endorsement and Special Education Reading Endorsement.

She taught school for 13 years, first year in a country school 30 miles from Big Sandy and moved on to Salmon Prairie in the Swan Valley in western Montana and also taught in Denton.

Palomino had been offered the first position as a reading instructor at the new private prison under construction at Shelby, "But I decided I would rather be here in Conrad."

Besides her academic credentials, she brings to the job a strong work ethic. Widowed from Malcolm Kesterson, she worked full time and at two part time positions when he couldn't work any more.

Officially, the County Superintendent position is an elected job and she will have to file for re-election in the year 2000. It is also a part time position.
