June and Rod Ash of Condon were awarded the "Lifetime Achievement Award" by Montana Audubon at the Flathead Bird Festival in Polson on June 3.

As long-time volunteers and leaders within the Flathead chapter of the National Audubon Society, Rod and June have worked to help that organization become a moderate, effective and respected voice of conservation in Montana. In addition to their many conservation efforts, they have been involved in fundraising, membership promotion, citizen science projects such as bird surveys and have been an integral part in the development of the Swan Ecosystem Center. Also, Rod served as President of Montana Audubon from 1994-1998.

The award, presented by current Montana Audubon President Dorothy Poulsen of Helena, thanked the Ashes for their love of wild places and for "those things that have driven you to spend so much of your lives improving Audubon and the state of Montana."

Other award winners were:

Conservationist of the Year - Howard Strause, Great Falls

Land Stewardship Award - Flathead Audubon Society (for its protection of the Owen Sowerwine Natural Area near Kalispell)

Environmental Educator of the Year - Kate Davis, Clinton.
