Though it looks like it's just over the hill, this plume of smoke from the Birk Fire in the Flathead National Forest near the Bob Marshall Wilderness is about 10 miles east and a little north of Seeley Lake. Started by lightning on Aug. 13, the fire doubled from 60 acres to over 120 acres Monday and continued sending up spectacular columns of smoke on Tuesday. As of Tuesday morning it was being monitored only, and fire officials were planning contingencies if it continues to grow.
