Seeley Lake Grade School Principal Shirley Johnson presented Dave Spence with the KECI Gold Star Award in recognition of excellence in education for 1998-99 at an assembly on October 23rd.

When Johnson asked the students how many of them had had Mr. Spence as a teacher, most of them cheered and raised their hands. And, when Johnson finished her presentation and handed him the plaque, the students reinforced the honor with lots of hip-hip-hurrays and clapping.

The award is given monthly by KECI Television out of Missoula. Students nominate their teachers. KECI came to the school last month and did a video with Spence.

"It was an honor," Dave Spence said. "There are many fine teachers in this school, and I think it's a reflection of the school as a whole."

Spence came to Seeley to teach in 1992. He taught kindergarten, the Gifted and Talented, French and art for three years.

The following year, he taught Title I, the Gifted and Talented, French and art. Since 1996, he has been teaching the fifth grade. He also takes care of the school computers.
